A book premiere at the Berliner Ensemble: Daniel Kehlmann reads from his new novel "Afrika" and talks with Sandra Kegel about it. The dark novel comedy is set in Berlin in the winter of 1884/85, where representatives of European states, the USA and the Ottoman Empire negotiate trade, territorial claims and expansion. As a colonial order takes shape, the Austrian negotiator Strinetzky tries to cover up a private fraud. The conversation also explores how literature transforms historical reality and makes colonial entanglements visible up to the present.
