A lecture by Cécile Wajsbrot on the hypnotic gaze, starting from Thomas Mann's novella 'Mario and the Magician' and the figure of Medusa. Wajsbrot is a writer who works mostly on novels but also essays and radio dramas, and since 2019 has been a member of the Akademie der Künste. The talk analyses the hypnotic gaze and its history in art and literature, as well as its possible implications in the politics of our current times. It is part of the 'AutoReduction' lecture series at ICI Berlin.
