"Gittersee" is a stage production at the Berliner Ensemble based on Charlotte Gneuss's acclaimed debut novel, in a version by Leonie Rebentisch, who also directs. In 1976 near Dresden, sixteen-year-old Karin is torn from her everyday life: her first great love Paul has disappeared, and a man named Wickwalz calls it "Republikflucht" (fleeing the republic) and keeps asking her questions. The more Karin tells him, naming a second name and signing a paper, the more clearly she sees what she would be better off not knowing. The play tells of how lonely silence can make you – and how lonely speaking can be, even when it is the truth.
