Orpheus in the Underworld is an opéra-bouffon in two acts and four scenes by Jacques Offenbach. The Komische Oper Berlin performs Barrie Kosky's staging, which reverses the myth: bored by her passionless marriage to the musician Orpheus, Eurydike gladly lets Pluto, lord of the underworld, carry her off to the realm of the dead. When Jupiter, too, learns of the beautiful mortal, a witty contest for her favor erupts, carried by an ensemble led by speaker Max Hopp. The piece culminates in the world-famous cancan.
