"Orpheus in der Unterwelt" is an opéra-bouffon in two acts and four scenes by Jacques Offenbach, to a libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Hector Crémieux. Barrie Kosky's staging, a co-production with the Salzburg Festival and Deutsche Oper am Rhein, follows Eurydike as she lets Pluto abduct her to the underworld, which sparks a witty contest for her between him and Jupiter. The show closes with Eurydike choosing to live as a Bacchant, carried by a spirited ensemble with speaker Max Hopp.
