It is given by Mrs Jacqui Pearce FSA, Senior Ceramics Specialist at MOLA and principal investigator on the Bartmann Goes Global project, and Prof. Vanessa Harding FSA, Emeritus Professor of London History at Birkbeck. The talk explores the stoneware Bartmann jug with its pot-bellied form and bearded face, made near Cologne from at least the 15th to the 18th centuries and exported worldwide. Drawing on an Anglo-German research project funded by AHRC and DFG, it examines surviving examples of different jug types and traces their journey from the Rhineland to the shops, homes and taverns of London and England.", "url": "https://noky.io/en/london/events/an-early-modern-phenomenon-the-bartmann-jug-and-its-context-38656/", "official_url": "https://www.sal.org.uk/events/bartmann-jug/", "image": "https://noky.io/images/6b8d1a3e4507cc55007019b383c0150f054a290d2bac5037e223bb686895a9d7-2000.webp", "dates": [{"start": "2026-11-05T17:00:00Z", "end": "2026-11-05T18:00:00Z", "place": "Society of Antiquaries", "address": "", "tickets": ""}], "similar": [{"title": "Ten Bamboo Studio \"Manual\" | Finding Nature and Culture in Woodblock Prints", "start": "2026-11-03T14:00:00Z", "end": null, "place": "Linnean Society", "address": "Burlington House, Piccadilly, W1J 0BF", "price": "Free", "price_from": "0.00", "price_to": "0.00", "tickets_url": "https://www.looge.co.uk/out/9ad0c6af-07b1-4f70-9679-f09b07bf3839?surface=event", "category": "talks-readings", "tags": ["diy/printmaking/woodcut", "history"], "description": "An online talk in the Linnean Lens Lecture series on the Ten Bamboo Studio Manual of Calligraphy and Painting, a 17th-century Chinese woodblock-printed book of more than 300 leaves with some 140 colour-printed images of flowers, birds, garden rocks and plants. The historian Xiangming Chen, Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Cambridge, situates the book in its original Ming Chinese context and asks what was at stake when it was collected for 18th-century England. The Linnean Society holds a later print that may have entered England in the 18th century.
