The British Interplanetary Society hosts an evening lecture titled “One Light-Day from Home” – Celebrating Voyager 1 with Dr Garry Hunt OBE, taking place in person at its headquarters and online. It marks Voyager 1 reaching one light-day from Earth, roughly 25.9 billion kilometres, so its radio signals take a full 24 hours to arrive home. Dr Garry Hunt, the only UK-resident scientist selected by NASA for the Voyager mission and a member of its Imaging Team, shares first-hand recollections from mission control, the outer planet encounters and the Pale Blue Dot campaign. Drawing on more than fifty years in planetary science, atmospheric physics and space broadcasting, he reflects on what it means for a human-made object to sit a full light-day from the world that built it.
