A hypnotist presents a sleepwalking soothsayer at a local carnival in a small German town, but by night the doctor wakes him to carry out his evil bidding. Directed by Robert Wiene and starring Werner Kraus and Conrad Veidt, the film is a monument of the silent era and often considered one of horror cinema's earliest examples. It remains a thrilling and innovative work over a century after its release, probing moral responsibility and human nature.
