A documentary screening of 'Karayuki-san: The Making of a Prostitute', shown on 16mm. Shohei Imamura follows Zendo Kikuyo, a woman in her seventies who was tricked into leaving Japan for Malaysia at nineteen and never returned. Imamura visits the former brothel where she worked and discusses her life there with bracing frankness. The film exposes how prostitution became an export commodity tied to Japan's economic and military expansion across South East Asia.
