Legend of Kaliakra is a theatre piece blending poetic text and music, performed in Bulgarian with English subtitles. It is produced and presented by the Legend of Kaliakra Collective and directed by Elitsaa Yovcheva, who has directed at the National Theatre and the Youth Theatre in Bulgaria. Inspired by the legend of forty maidens who chose death over slavery, it explores the hidden emotional lives of the women behind one of Bulgaria's most enduring stories. Through four interconnected female perspectives, it reimagines a historical narrative as a story of choice, dignity, and freedom, and premiered in Sofia in 2023 before touring cities along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
