The Public Health Walking Tour is a guided walk through 19th century Southwark, exploring streets shaped by the area's former slums. Led by guides from the Old Operating Theatre Museum, it uncovers a story of poverty and public health, from workhouse children and body-snatchers to sewage-slick river-banks. The roughly 90-minute to two-hour tour offers an insight into the lives of working people and how social progress often came at a cost borne by the poorest. It begins and ends in the old Guy's Courtyard just off St Thomas Street, not at the Museum, and includes discussions of sex, death, disease, human remains, and dissection.
