Raise the Red Lantern is a film by Zhang Yimou from 1991, shown in a new digital restoration. It follows Songlian (Gong Li), an educated young woman sold into marriage with the rich tyrant Master Chen, who must navigate the maze of political and sexual challenges within the fortress-like Qiao Family Compound among his four competing wives. Winner of the Silver Lion at Venice in 1991, it is considered perhaps Zhang's most accomplished film and the culmination of his 'Red Trilogy'.
