The Afronauts is a play at the Royal Court Theatre about Zambia's defiant 1960s dream of joining the space race. Written by Sky Arts Award-winning playwright Ryan Calais Cameron as a world premiere, it tells the true(ish) story of the Zambian Space Program, in which a schoolteacher gathers a group of misfit dreamers and trains them for lift-off while the world's great powers set their sights on the moon. Lucian Msamati stars as Edward Nkoloso, the schoolteacher and freedom fighter behind Zambia's quixotic contribution to the Space Race.
