A screening of two films by Sho Miyake: the short August 8th, followed by And Your Bird Can Sing. Adapted from Yasushi Sato's novel and set in the port city of Hakodate, And Your Bird Can Sing follows three young adults drifting through work, friendship, and desire as summer gives way to an uncertain future. With naturalistic performances and loose rhythms, Miyake finds profound emotional resonance in the ordinary. The short August 8th is a companion piece of sorts, starring Shizuka Ishibashi.
