Autumn Sonata is a film about a world-renowned concert pianist who returns home to reunite with her now-married daughter, long a distant second to her mother's career ambitions. Over an emotionally draining 24 hours, the two women exhuming old resentments and struggle towards reconciliation. It was directed by Ingmar Bergman and stars Liv Ullmann as the daughter. The pianist is played, in her final screen role, by an actress described as Sweden's most popular export before the Volvo.
