Begotten is a 1989 film by E. Elias Merhige, shown as a late-night screening. It has no characters in the ordinary sense, only figures named God Killing Himself, Mother Earth, and Son of Earth — Flesh on Bone. God tears open his body and dies; Mother Earth rises from what remains and gives birth to the Son, who is seized, tortured, and killed by the Nomads before being briefly revived. After the Nomads destroy her too, robed figures grind down what remains of mother and son and return them to the soil, and the ground flowers.
