A book release event at Strand Bookstore's third-floor Rare Book Room, where historian and biographer James Gleick discusses his new book The Telephone: A New History, moderated by writer Rivka Galchen. Gleick, the bestselling author of Chaos and The Information, traces the telephone's history from Alexander Graham Bell's 1876 invention—a contest replete with bribery and fraud—to the Bell System's monopoly and Bell Labs' role in ushering in the Information Age. The book shows how the telephone changed human nature and intimate life, and why its legacy endures in today's networks and our need for connection. Signed copies can be purchased for those who cannot attend.
