A screening of the film Raging Bull at the Museum of the Moving Image. Martin Scorsese directed this 1980 film about boxer Jake La Motta, played by Robert De Niro in an Oscar-winning role, whose life is dramatized with a mix of Shakespearean tragedy and documentary-like realism, fueled by passion and self-destruction. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty play Jake's brother and second wife in nominated performances, and Michael Chapman's glistening black-and-white cinematography is called one of the glories of contemporary cinema. Scorsese turned the boxing movie on its head, forgoing every cliché to create an indelible work of art.
