'Spotlight: Sam Mattax' is an exhibition at the Fredericks & Freiser gallery, showing three recent large-scale paintings. It is the first presentation in the gallery's new Spotlight series, conceived as a focused studio-visit-style view of an artist's work as it takes shape. The paintings by Sam Mattax are built through dragging, scraping, and rebuilding, and mark a shift in his practice as forms multiply. The result is a new density and intricacy, as the works move from accumulation toward structure within the abstraction itself.
