A lecture on how the term 'Impressionism' came about, starting from Claude Monet's painting 'Impression, soleil levant' (1872, Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris). Meant originally as mockery, the term soon became a key concept of modernity. A close analysis of the picture and contemporary reactions show how perception, painting and the understanding of art fundamentally changed in the 1870s. Monet thus ushered in a turning point in art.
