The service is a memorial event for the people who died at the Berlin Wall. The Wall cut through the heart of the city, dividing streets and neighbourhoods, families and friends, and the violence at the border destroyed many lives. At the service in the Chapel of Reconciliation a biography is read aloud and the name of one of the 140 victims is named, and the closing prayer includes all who long for freedom, including people who are still fleeing today. It is run by the Evangelical congregation of Versöhnung and the Berlin Wall Foundation, has taken place since 13 August 2005, is held by a circle of people from across the city, and is led by Esther Schabow.
