A round-table discussion at the Falling Walls conference on the technical roadmap for industrial fusion demonstrators. It is run by Gauss Fusion, with Frank Laukien (Bruker Corporation), Bernd Rech (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin) and Christoph Kirchlechner (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) as speakers. The point is that net energy gain alone is not enough: future demonstrators must sustain a self-heating plasma, breed sufficient tritium fuel, and enable modular manufacturing, assembly and replacement of magnets for maintenance. Systems engineering choices made now will determine whether fusion can scale from experimental devices to industrial power plants.
