Lavagante: a love story under Portugal's dictatorship.

"Lavagante" tells of a passionate encounter in early-1960s Lisbon between Daniel, a doctor opposed to the Salazar regime, and Cecília, a young student. Their love unfolds in a country of censorship, political persecution and constant surveillance. As student unrest erupts in Lisbon, Daniel is arrested and Cecília is left to confront the power of the political police. Directed by Mário Barroso, the film entwines love with fear, betrayal and the contradictions of feminism and female emancipation under the dictatorship.
