Berliner Schnauze on the stand: panel on politeness.

A panel discussion on politeness in everyday language, taking on the famous blunt Berlin manner – charming and direct to some, disrespectful to others. It is organised by the Dahlem Center for Linguistics and the Dahlem Humanities Center as part of Berlin Science Week. Linguists discuss with guests from media and research how politeness works, why it changes, and why different ideas of polite communication lead to misunderstandings, in Berlin and beyond. The audience is explicitly invited to contribute their own experiences and questions, and a non-alcoholic reception follows.
