About
A screening of the film 'Rose', followed by a question-and-answer session with its director. Austrian filmmaker Markus Schleinzer's third feature stars Sandra Hüller as Rose, an intriguing woman in 17th-century Mitteleuropa who has assumed the identity and privileges of men – first fighting as a soldier of fortune in the Thirty Years' War, then adopting the name of a fallen comrade to claim his family's abandoned land. Living alone on the farm with well-treated farmhands, she rouses the suspicions of envious villagers until slaying a marauding beast earns their grudging respect – so much that a neighbour insists on marrying 'him' to his daughter, Suzanna, played by Caro Braun. Shot in crystalline black-and-white by Gerald Kerkletz and set to a vocal score by Tara Nome Doyle, the film blends stillness and good humour with a rebuke of patriarchal wrongs.
