Sean Scully

Sean Scully's exhibition 'Shanghai' shows new works from his Landline series, in which broad horizontal stripes evoke the natural horizon. The Irish-born-inspired paintings are largely drawn from his years in Ireland, especially looking out to the sea, with thick, gestural brushstrokes and loose bands of colour marking a move from his earlier hard-edged minimalism toward a more expressive style. The works evoke land, sea and sky, and the indistinct lines between them, revealing the elemental relationships and sublime character that compose our world. It is Sean Scully's first solo exhibition in Shanghai since his 2014 career-spanning retrospective at the Shanghai Himalayas Museum, presented by Lisson.
