About

Through Our Eyes: Sámi Art and Culture is a free group exhibition celebrating the art and culture of the Sámi, Europe's only recognised Indigenous people, whose traditional land spans northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. It is curated by Sámi visual artist Matti Aikio and Somerset House's Director of Exhibitions Dr Cliff Lauson. Spread across five galleries, it brings together 19 artists working today, from sculpture and photography to video and performance art, including rarely-seen work by pioneers such as Britta Marakatt-Labba and Iver Jåks. Alongside a new commission by Outi Pieski made from hundreds of shawl tassels, the show tackles issues like the environment and Indigenous rights while remaining full of humour, creativity and hope.
