Curt Bloch and his Underwater Cabaret
Society of Illustrators, East 63rd Street 128, 10065 New York, Manhattan
$10.00 – $15.00
About
A lecture about Curt Bloch, a Jewish writer who, while in hiding from the Nazis in the Dutch city of Enschede, produced 96 handmade magazines with his own collages and 492 handwritten poems between the summer of 1943 and his liberation in the spring of 1945. The lecture is presented by designer Thilo von Debschitz and Simone Bloch, Curt Bloch's daughter, with poet Samuel Haecker reading a selection of the poems. Bloch's satirical works, recently rediscovered and made into a digital archive honored with the Grimme Online Award, offer a deeply personal perspective on life under Nazi persecution. Presented in partnership with the German Consulate General New York, the event ends with a small gift for each guest.
