Life Ascending, lecture on mammals at 6,000 m in the Andes.
About
Life Ascending is an in-person lecture at The Explorers Club with an audience Q&A and a beer and wine reception. Evolutionary biologist and mountaineer Jay Storz presents his high-elevation zoological surveys in the Central Andes, carried out with collaborators in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru since 2020. Combining mountain climbing and live-trapping of small mammals in the Puna de Atacama and other remote regions, the surveys have set new world records for mice living on or near the summits of volcanoes over 6,000 m, heights once thought uninhabitable by mammals. His research reveals evolved mechanisms of physiological adaptation that let these animals survive in exceedingly hostile environments.
