About
A pop-up in the International Center of Photography's shop where visitors can meet MAKAN, an artist-run publisher, and browse and buy its latest photobooks, including the new title Take a Seat by photographer Natalie Tischler. MAKAN is an independent, artist-run publishing house founded in New York in 2024 by Yemeni American artist Ibi Ibrahim, and its name means 'place' or 'space' in Arabic. In two years it has published eleven titles, beginning with photography from the Global South and its diasporas and growing to encompass artist books, experimental photographic works, archives, and writing. The press aims to bring voices, places, and perspectives often absent from mainstream publishing into wider cultural conversation, letting each book's form emerge from the work itself.
