About
Sankofa Series: Anime and Manga in Black America is an in-person session of a monthly program exploring Black history, art, and culture. The Sankofa Series, run by the Langston Hughes Community Library & Cultural Center, began during COVID-19 amid national conversations about Black history and the Black Lives Matter movement, and is being brought back in a new form. This month it explores the Black anime and manga fandom, covering the history behind Black America's interest in anime, the growth of the subculture, and more, with weekly sessions including a manga drawing workshop, discussions on Black intersectionality and culture in anime and manga, anime film screenings, and talks with creators and fans. The program draws on resources from the Black Heritage Reference Center and online resources, and is funded through a grant from the New York State Black Legislative Task Force.
