About
This is the 4th Annual Black Solidarity Day, a community gathering for Staten Island's Black communities. Black Solidarity Day was founded in 1969 by Dr. Carlos E. Russell, a Panamanian-born activist, historian, playwright, and educator, calling on Black people to demonstrate collective strength by withdrawing from work, school, and commercial activity. The annual commemoration carries that purpose forward through reflection, education, and community dialogue, bringing together organizations, faith leaders, educators, business owners, young people, and residents. The goal is to strengthen relationships, advance coalition building, identify shared priorities, and encourage partnerships supporting the community's social, educational, economic, and civic empowerment.
