On the national Read-Aloud Day, people all over Germany read to children – at home, in schools, day-care centres or digitally. Behind the campaign are the Stiftung Lesen, the Deutsche Bahn Stiftung and DIE ZEIT (photos: Gert Albrecht). Regular reading aloud lays the foundations for education in the first years of life, fosters language skills and better educational opportunities. Under the 2026 motto "Ich lese vor – Du auch?" (I read aloud – do you too?), the focus is on the volunteer readers whose read-aloud activities bring the day to life.
