About

A lecture at the Society of Antiquaries titled 'An early modern phenomenon: the Bartmann jug and its context', part of an Ordinary Meeting of Fellows. It is given by Mrs Jacqui Pearce FSA, Senior Ceramics Specialist at MOLA and principal investigator on the Bartmann Goes Global project, and Prof. Vanessa Harding FSA, Emeritus Professor of London History at Birkbeck. The talk explores the stoneware Bartmann jug with its pot-bellied form and bearded face, made near Cologne from at least the 15th to the 18th centuries and exported worldwide. Drawing on an Anglo-German research project funded by AHRC and DFG, it examines surviving examples of different jug types and traces their journey from the Rhineland to the shops, homes and taverns of London and England.
