Phuong Mai Nguyen's animated film about surf and first love.

In Waves is a hand-drawn animated film that rides through the sun-soaked surf culture of California. Directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen, it is adapted from AJ Dungo's autobiographic novel and tells of Dungo's first high-school love, first surf session and the dreadful illness that breaks a perfect picture. The first animation film to open Cannes' Critics' Week, it celebrates the origins of surf in Hawaii, its sensitive characters and an animation style inspired by Hockney's melancholic art. The screening is preceded by a recorded introduction by the director.
