Lift + Calais The Last Border
Close-Up Film Centre, Sclater Street 97-99, E1 6HR London, Whitechapel
About
An evening of two documentaries by Marc Isaacs, Lift and Calais: The Last Border, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker moderated by Gareth Evans. In Lift, made in 2001, Isaacs sets himself up with his camera in the lift of a London tower block, waiting for the right moment to ask residents questions, capturing the whole of British society in a humorous and moving microcosm. Calais: The Last Border, from 2003, weaves together character-driven stories of refugees, migrants and English expatriates in the French port town that is, for hundreds of migrants, the final barrier in the search for a new life in England. Together the films build a picture of transient places and inhabitants who dream of somewhere better.
