About

"Proud Mary" is a solo theatre piece at the Etcetera Theatre, part of the VOILA! Festival. Written and performed by MJ Lee, it is a love letter to an immigrant's complex relationship with her immigrant mother, tracing their journey from Korea to Canada. Set during her mother's celebration of life, Mary makes three traditional offerings - food, money, and shoes - each revealing an aspect of their bond and the unattainable endeavour to simply make mom proud. The 50-minute show blends music, physical storytelling, singing, a little audience participation, and a lot of silliness.
