About

The 544 is an exhibition of 544 cyanotypes forming a photographic memorial. Artist Sarah Ketelaars created the work for 544 psychiatric patients murdered by the Nazis in 1941 in Latvia, one image for each man, woman or child killed. Her grandmother worked at the hospital from which the patients were taken, and no memorial to them previously existed. Knowing nothing of their identities, she imagined each as a unique, precious being, hinting at celebratory moments from the lives lived before they died.
