Manasa Chitra: the Art of Mental Health from Bengaluru to Bethlem
Bethlem Museum of the Mind, Bethlem Royal Hospital, Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham, Kent, BR3 3BX, Eden Park
About
An exhibition of pictures made by artists from India with lived experience of mental distress, opening at the Bethlem Museum of the Mind. Some were drawn by patients at what in the 1950s was known as Bangalore Mental Hospital as part of occupational therapy, while others are by people living with mental health challenges in and around Bengaluru today. The 1950s works came to England through the friendship between M.V. Govindaswamy and German emigré psychiatrist Wilhelm Mayer-Gross, who together helped establish that hospital, later the National Institute for Mental Health and Neurosciences. Full of movement, colour, humour and joy, the pictures tell stories of people, places, homes and religions, sharing a message of hope that is authentically one of India.
