About
"Fatherland" is a new feature film set at the height of the Cold War. Directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, it stars Sandra Hüller, Hanns Zischler, and August Diehl. It follows the writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika—an actress, writer, and rally driver—on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a divided Germany in ruins, from the Allied-occupied city of Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Hüller's performance is described as quietly grand and unforgettable.

Critics
7.3Very good
Critics praise the lead performances, elegant black-and-white cinematography and the evocative postwar atmosphere. They fault the sparse, elliptical storytelling and historical gaps that leave the film hard to follow without background knowledge.
