About

Printed Matter hosts the New York launch of 'The Radical Unpresent: Cultural Resistance in a Fractured World' (MIT Press) by artist, writer, and activist Gregory Sholette. The book traces a rupture in historical time through Brexit, Trump, COVID, and the J6 Capitol attack, arguing that MAGA acts as a 'retro-vanguard' manufacturing its own imaginary past, while artists resist through 'phantom archives,' conspicuous repair, and reenactment. Sholette will be joined in conversation by artist and writer Naeem Mohaiemen, whose work on institutional memory and the buried archives of the nonaligned movement is featured in the book. The evening promises a discussion of memory, resistance, and what remains unfinished.
