About
An evening talk at Printed Matter, Inc. celebrating the New York launch of Gregory Sholette's new book, The Radical Unpresent: Cultural Resistance in a Fractured World, published by MIT Press. The book argues that a rupture in historical time runs through Brexit, Trump, COVID, and the J6 Capitol attack, casting MAGA as a new "retro-vanguard" manufacturing its own imaginary past, and proposes the "phantom archive" as a space where artists resist this dislocation through repair and reenactment. Sholette will be joined in conversation by Naeem Mohaiemen, an artist and writer whose work, also featured in the book, excavates institutional memory including the buried archives of the nonaligned movement.
