HEITOR DOS PRAZERES
Andrew Kreps Gallery, Cortlandt Alley 22, 10013, Manhattan
About
Andrew Kreps Gallery presents an exhibition of works by Heitor dos Prazeres, the first showing of his work in New York, spanning paintings made between 1944 and 1966. Prazeres (1898–1966), born in Rio de Janeiro, was a polymath who shaped samba and Rio's cultural life as a musician and composer before turning to painting in the mid-1930s. His vibrant paintings depict Brazilian Black culture — samba, capoeira, popular festivals, Afro-Brazilian religions, and everyday life in Rio's 'Pequena África' — capturing both joy and suffering amid social inequity. Made with the collaboration of Almeida & Dale, the exhibition runs across the gallery's spaces at 394 Broadway and 22 Cortlandt Alley.
