About

An in-person lecture at The Explorers Club on the Moskitia, a remote region on Honduras' northeast coast of rainforests, lagoons and indigenous communities, including the little-studied Miskito Cays coral reef system about 120 kilometers offshore. Marine biologist Gabriela Ochoa, an EC50 2026 honoree, will speak about shark fisheries and conservation and the lives of people who depend on them. She will tell the story of ilili, the first Honduran shark conservation organization she founded, and its work with Miskito communities to document shark diversity and the health of remote coral reefs toward creating an indigenous-led protected area. The evening includes an audience Q&A and a beer and wine reception.
