About

News From Home is a screening of Chantal Akerman's 1976 nonfiction diary/essay/poem, filmed in New York City subway stations and on street corners with cinematographer Babette Mangolte, with Akerman reading her mother's letters. Made when Akerman was 26 and living in New York, far from her native Belgium and her mother, it is considered one of the greatest portraits of a city put on film and a touching depiction of maternal love. It screens in the English-language version.

Critics

7.3Very good

The critic admires the film's intricate play between sound and image, its fixed, distanced views of the city, and its subtle meditation on presence and absence between mother and daughter. Little is faulted, beyond warning that viewers expecting narrative payoff may be disappointed.
