The Holy Mountain
IFC Center, 6th Avenue 323, 10014, Manhattan
About
The Holy Mountain is a feature film shown on the big screen in Manhattan. Writer-director Alejandro Jodorowsky, who also plays the lead role of 'The Alchemist,' made this scandal-causing follow-up to El Topo, filled with sacrilegious imagery, existential symbolism and outrageous violence. In the story, the Alchemist gathers people from all walks of life, renames them for the planets, strips them of their worldly baggage through strange mystical rites, and leads them to Lotus Island to ascend the Holy Mountain and displace the immortal gods who secretly rule the universe. The screening presents a new digital restoration overseen by the filmmaker himself.

Critics
7.8Very good
Critics admire its dazzling, surreal imagery, bold symbolism and audacious ambition. They fault its pretension, excess and self-indulgence, with some finding the spectacle overwhelming and the film difficult to endure.
