The Housemaid
The Metrograph, Ludlow Street 7, 10002 New York, Manhattan
About
A screening of the South Korean film The Housemaid, made in 1960 by director Kim Ki-young and starring Lee Eun-shim. The routine domestic life of a middle-class family is turned upside-down after a young woman joins the household to help with the chores—though what she does instead is turn the house into a boiling cauldron of lust. A mélange of melodrama, morality tale, noir thriller, and horror film that comes together to exercise a vice-like grip. The film was restored by the Korean Film Archive and Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project and is widely regarded as one of the country's greatest films.

Critics
The critic praises a delirious, heightened melodrama called the director's masterpiece, admiring its bleak view of human motives and suspenseful, Hitchcockian style. Little is faulted, beyond noting the filmmaker as somewhat uneven.
