About

"The Immigrant" is a screening of James Gray's 2014 drama, part of a series devoted to the director's New York films. The film follows Ewa, a young Polish woman who arrives at Ellis Island in 1921 with her sister and soon finds herself alone on the Lower East Side, scrambling toward a new life. Shot by Darius Khondji with subtle expressionism, it is a finely etched story of immigrant lives, building to an emotional crescendo of romantic sacrifice. It stars Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner, and Angela Sarafyan.

Critics

6.8Good

Critics admire the film's handsome visuals, strong period atmosphere and Cotillard's moving lead performance, but fault a thin, uninvolving story whose drama lacks force and whose characters feel underdeveloped.
