The Lily of Quito | Cantata on St. Mariana de Jesús de Paredes
Saint Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, Park Avenue 990, 10028, Manhattan
About
The Lily of Quito | Cantata on St. Mariana de Jesús de Paredes is a concert evening of sacred music featuring composer and soprano Dr. Stephanie Susberich's cantata on St. Mariana de Jesús de Paredes, the 17th-century mystic and patroness of Ecuador, performed with the Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola and the Park Avenue Consort. Originally composed as Dr. Susberich's doctoral dissertation, the cantata is a large-scale work for soprano and ensemble that draws directly from Mariana's own words to render the saint's inner world in a contemporary musical language. The program also includes Joaquín Rodrigo's La Despedida de Azucena from his oratorio on the same saint, Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla's Missa Ego flos campi, and Rodrigo's Ave Maria. A Meet the Composer talk precedes the concert, and a reception follows in Wallace Hall.
