“Women and the Blues: Beareather Reddy Sings the Classics.”
Poets House, River Terrace 10, 10282, Manhattan
About
An evening of classic blues at Poets House, where singer Beareather Reddy performs the songs of the 1920s and 1930s. She is accompanied by pianist Richard Harper and guitarist Ayodele Maakheru. Her journey through the era of the "Classic Blues Women" covers pioneering Black female singers and their songs of life's struggles, poverty, love, and freedom to love, a period that marked the introduction of African Americans to the recording industry. She talks about and sings icons Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Bessie Smith who paved the way.
